Dog Trainers

Welcome to the Florida Sniffspot top dog trainer list for 2023. This is a list of the top dog trainers in Florida based on votes from the Sniffspot community and the general public. Over 55,000 votes were used in compiling this list. We have only included the top trainers with sufficient votes and the trainers are ordered in terms of the number of votes received. Trainers that tied are ranked in reverse alphabetical order based on first name. All dog trainers on this list are positive reinforcement only, as defined by no force, fear, intimidation, or aversive methods used. To learn more about our dog trainer contest, feel free to view the dog trainer contest post.

Dog training is one of the most important activities someone can do with their dog. Many come to dog training through a specific issue they want addressed, anything from barking to separation anxiety. Some have adopted dogs from animal shelters with an abusive experience and some just have happy puppies looking for everyday life skills. Trainers can help with all kinds of specific skills and issues, from leash manners to territorial aggression to anxiety around skateboards to common puppy challenges. However, what many discover is that working with a trainer is actually a way for a pet owner to deepen their relationship with their dog. The enhanced communication skills that result can increase quality of life, be a rewarding experience, be a social experience and lead to more harmonious relationships. Knowing that one’s dog is having a happier life can dramatically improve peace of mind. As the saying goes: happy dog, happy life. And it extends further than just the dog, to the pet owners. Owner empowerment can actually improve the relationship between owners. And finding the right trainer can make all the difference in the experience.

This list is compiled by Sniffspot, which is the largest network of private dog parks for rent in the world. Each of the thousands of Sniffspot dog parks are hosted by locals on private land with 100% private bookings to maximize safety for guests and their dogs. Sniffspot offers various types of dog parks, including fenced, water parks, indoor dog parks, dog beaches and more. Sniffspot has worked closely with dog trainers to create safe spaces for dogs and our top trainer lists are a natural extension of that relationship. You can browse Sniffspot's local dog parks here.

I am now the proud owner of East Bay Dog Spot, a five-star dog training facility in Gulf Breeze offering an array of group classes and private dog training.

My training is a reflection of who I am, teaching with kindness and patience. With a passion for both dogs and their owners I am also the Vice President and a founding member of the Friends of Santa Rosa County Animal Shelter, a local non-profit that supports our county animal shelter through funds, community outreach, and pet safety net programs.

  • Puppy training

More info about service provided: As the owner of East Bay Dog Spot, my team and I offer an array of group classes and private training programs to meet the need of any pet owner. Group classes range from Puppy and Beginner classes all the way up to Advanced or Reactivity classes. Group classes and private lessons are primarily held at our training facility in Gulf Breeze (In Home sessions are limited). Because I believe that training continues long after classes end, existing clients have ongoing access to trainers, our training library, monthly pack walks and workshops.

Behavioral issue focus: Reactivity, separation anxiety, and general manners and obedience

Training methods: All my training is force free and positive reinforcement based. I assist owners on selecting the best program for them and their dogs whether that is private training or a group class. Private clients receive customized training plans to address any problem behaviors.

Why I became a dog trainer: Like most trainers, I was raised around dogs my whole life. My parents owned rottweilers most of my life and also helped train guide dogs. I've always loved dogs and began working with them in a local doggy daycare after separating the Air Force.

I quickly realized that I wanted to do more than just be around dogs, I wanted to help them and their owners. I was fortunate to find a wonderful mentor in the local area that helped develop my knowledge and understanding of dogs to guide me into becoming the dog trainer I am today!

My favorite part of being a dog trainer: My favorite part of dog training is seeing the impact my work has. Dogs who were on the brink of rehoming being able to live harmoniously in their house. Frustrated owners finally feeling confident about what they need to do and understanding why their dog behaves the way it does. I love animals, and I am blessed with the opportunity to help dogs, people, and my community with my knowledge.

My #1 dog training tip: Set your dog up for success! Whether you're introducing a new skill or addressing a behavioral problem, manage the environment and take baby steps so your dog can't fail.

I was the coordinator of Tallahassee Memorial's Animal Therapy Department and I have been screening, training, evaluating, and managing over 180 therapy animal teams that visited the Big Bend region's healthcare facilities, nursing homes, and schools for over 2 years. Although I have learned a lot via reading books, attending seminars, and training clients' dogs,

I have learned the most about dog training from my two dogs! I have an Australian Cattle Dog, Sydney, and a Dalmatian, Bindi. They are both totally Deaf, so we do things a little differently!

Christiana Parker

Christy has been working as a Professional Figure Skater traveling the world for 12 years. Originally from Cincinnati, Ohio, she decided to settle down in Florida when she accepted a figure skating contract at Busch Gardens. During this time, she began studying animal behavior in her spare time and hasn't stopped learning since.

Her passion for animals has existed since the day she was born. She believes she was put on this Earth to help animals; specifically, teaching dogs and their families how to build a strong bond through training.

She went on to start working in a dog shelter where she found a profound love for rescue. Christy got hands-on experience rehabilitating, training, and fostering a wide variety of breeds, as well as those exhibiting fear, aggression, anxiety, and reactivity. Christy is an active volunteer for multiple different rescues such as Husky Haven of Florida where she assists in fostering, transport, and performing behavior assessments on dogs entering the rescues.

Christy is proud to share her life with her 5 rescue dogs Keela (Retriever mix), Lumen (Siberian Husky), Teegan (Husky/Malamute mix), her first “foster fail” Zayn (Siberian Husky mix), and the newest addition, Jaxon (Husky mix).

Currently pursuing a Behavior Consultant Certification, she regularly attends dog training seminars, workshops, and jumps at the chance of any additional hands-on training and behavior modification opportunities.

If I am able to help families learn how to better understand their dog and live in harmony together, I am taking one smell step in helping keep dogs in a loving home and out of the shelter.

Maddie Speirs

Growing up, I took every opportunity to work with animals that I could find. I volunteered at shelters, worked to ride at the barn, and got my first real job as a doggy daycare attendant in high school. When I got to college, where I chose to dual major in Animal and Environmental Studies, I joined a wildlife rescue team and have saved seabirds, birds of prey, squirrels, possums, and more.

On a camping trip during my sophomore year of college, I found a dog who had been dumped on the side of the road. Knowing I couldn't leave her there, I took her in, and when I couldn't find her owner or a willing home, I decided to keep her. That dog threw me into the world of dog training, and I never looked back. Both of the dogs that I have shared my life with have come to me with significant behavioral issues, so I have developed plenty of empathy for dog guardians who are struggling with their dog.

I know how hard it can be to share your life with a dog who is having a hard time, and I am excited to make life easier for both you and your dog! I am a certified SA Pro, so if your dog struggles with alone time or being separated from 'their person' I am here to help! Helping dogs and their people through separation anxiety and similar behaviors is a passion of mine because comfortable alone time is often such a relief for both the humans and the dogs.

Because I know how hard life can be with difficult dogs, I am also really passionate about working with dogs through puppyhood and adolescence to create stable and resilient adult dogs. I have become a firm believer in positive reinforcement and consent based training. I want the dogs that I work with to be enthusiastic and unafraid learners who feel comfortable showing me how they really feel. I am a lifelong learner, and I am dedicated to continuing my education, and staying up to date on the most humane and effective ways to train. I’m

Certifications: SAPT

Services include:

  • In home training
  • Reactive dog training
  • Off leash training
  • Puppy training

More info about service provided: Adventure dog classes, basic manners, separation anxiety training, puppy socialization and off leash training

Behavioral issue focus: I am certified in separation anxiety training and I love working with difficult puppies and young dogs to create long lasting foundations for life as a resilient and stable adult dog.

Training methods: We start with a behavior consultation to gain a holistic understanding of our client's needs and form a personalized training plan that will be effective and achievable. Each dog is giving a holistic training plan that encompasses mental and physical health by addressing sleep, feeding, exercise and more. Training goals often include settling and socialization for young dogs, and gradual desensitization to alone time for my separation anxiety dogs.

Why I became a dog trainer: I love working with people and I really love working with animals. My learning journey with my own two difficult dogs really opened my mind to dog training as a career, and I have been pursuing it since.

My favorite part of being a dog trainer: I love that I have the chance to improve people's lives with their dogs, and it brings me joy to know that the people who I work with enjoy their dogs more after our time together, and the dogs I work with enjoy their people more as well.

My #1 dog training tip: Focus on the skills that really make a difference in your life with your dog, and forget about the rest.

As part of Stilwell's hand selected team by Victoria herself, Sandra became a member of a global network of world-class positive reinforcement trainers. Sandra is also a graduate of the Animal Behavior College, a Certified Canine Good Citizen Evaluator for the AKC, a Certified Trick Dog Instructor, a member of the Doggone Safe program (an organization promoting safe relationships between children and dogs), a member of the Association of Force-Free Pet Professionals (PPG, Pet Professional Guild), a member of the Association of Professional Pet Dog Trainers, a member of the South Florida Force Free Trainers Network and is certified in Dog First Aid with the American Red Cross.

As important as certifications are when choosing a dog trainer, experience, science based methodology, and above all, love and concern for the well being of dogs are just as crucial. Her work as Head Trainer of a local dog training company for years led Sandra to open her own business, Learned Behaviors Dog Training, where she could broaden her scope of clients and apply her expertise in dealing with challenging cases following a fully humane, force-free concept.

Sandra enjoys working with children and easing the communication between children and dogs. Engaging children in training and making it fun for all involved helps the learning process and prevents future mishaps.

Having trained many different breeds from teacups with potty training problems to 135-lb Mastiffs with reactivity and aggressive issues, Sandra proves that no breed is too big or too difficult to be trained force-free and humanely. Sandra was mentored by Force Free Trainers and Behaviorists and have applied the techniques on her own challenging rescue, a Ridgeback Pit Bull mix, which only validated the concept that fear should not be confronted with intimidation and pain.

Love for all dogs come naturally to Sandra, but her real passion lies on dogs much like her own; dogs with a real need to be understood, dogs perceived to have aggression issues, dogs that fit in what is known as the 'bully breeds' category and dogs that do not fit at all.

It is important to note that force free and positive reinforcement do not mean lack of structural conduct or free rein of the house. Sandra believes that patience, structure, consistency, a little more patience and a lot of love are the key elements to a happy, well balanced and confident dog, and therefore a great family member. Sandra also believes that, every dog, no matter how well-behaved, needs training, which will strengthen the bond between pet and owner.

Love, connection, security and happiness are sentiments we humans crave. Animals eagerly and unconditionally step up and deliver these needs wholeheartedly and without any expectations or semblance of quid pro quo. Since founding HumaneK9 Dog Training my goal has always been to develop programs that curate a genuine relationship between owner and pet based on respect, trust, support and love.

My philosophy is relationship-based training, and I believe that coaching you and your dog is a journey and one that should be fun! Engagement with your dog and embracing the human-animal bond is crucial to building a sustaining, lifelong relationship with your dog. Dogs are social, thinking beings who deserve to be treated in a humane, fear-free, loving and respectful way.

In 1998 after surviving a major health crisis, I realized I couldn't go back to my 20-year corporate career and needed to fiercely pursue my lifelong passion of working with animals. As a child, I'd take in every stray animal in need that I encountered from dogs to squirrels to snakes. That calling to help animals led me to start volunteering at the Humane Society of Broward County (HSBC). The gig eventually evolved into a full-time position where I had the opportunity to work with and train a variety of dog breeds. I developed a structured animal assisted therapy program for the nonprofit, cultivated community connections and trained more than 1000+ volunteer therapy teams. In 2006, I decided to become a contractor for the HSBC and open my own dog training business. Since then, I have guided pet parents and their companion animals through positive training methods that have further enriched their lives.

With the experience, knowledge and conviction I've nurtured over the past two decades I created the Magical Canine Connections (MCC) Animal Assisted Therapy Program in honor of my beloved dog Karma. Karma was the first crisis dog onsite after the horrific shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on February 14, 2018. I saw first-hand how impactful it was to have animals working side-by-side with First Responders during a crisis. Our Magical Canine Connections AAT Community Outreach Program has provided much needed comfort, joy and support to a wide variety of people.

I began dog training as a hobby, attending obedience classes and working with private dog trainers in 1999. Later I earned a Canine Good Citizen certificate and a Pet Partners registration with my dog, Maddy, which allowed us to visit at a hospital for four years in animal therapy. I worked as a trainer at a dog daycare in their boarding kennels and trained informally in agility and flyball. I began offering private dog training professionally in 2013. I have built a successful business and earned many happy clients making dog training positive and effective for the whole family!

I have over two thousand hours training dogs and their people! I have worked with many breeds, all ages and all issues including fear and aggression. I am experienced in partnering with Veterinarians and Veterinary Behaviorists when needed to work on behavior modification plans. In my previous corporate career as a Human Resources Manager I gained much experience in training people and draw from that in my dog training. Outside of dog training I spent five years in search and rescue and was also certified as a volunteer firefighter. I have two adopted children and we enjoy going to the beach, reading, movies, studying Spanish as a second language, exploring around Jacksonville and Northeast Florida!

Gari Weinraub

As a child growing up on the outskirts of Manhattan, all I asked of my parents was to give me a small zoo of my own. I brought home every stray animal I could pick up and carry.
As a young adult, I was fortunate enough to work at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City as an assistant to the curators of Mammalogy.

But the west coast beckoned me and I moved to Washington State where I completed a B.A. in two disciplines; Ethology (Animal Behavior) and Photography from Western Washington University.

Upon graduation, I worked as an Assistant Zookeeper Aide for 15 years at Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle, primarily with Asian Sun Bears and Sloth Bears. I also photographed several exhibits for display and many international presentations.

Pursuing a simultaneous career as a photographer, I have been published in several national magazines, books and newspapers and continue to photograph today, specializing in pets. See some of my work here.

Becoming a certified dog trainer and canine behavior consultant was a natural progression and I attended the highly acclaimed, licensed and prestigious Northwest School of Canine Studies, obtaining a certificate in Canine Studies (CCS) as a Behavior Consultant.

Since 2007, I have been helping dogs and their companions on both coasts, Washington State and now as a permanent resident in South Florida.

I have helped hundreds of dogs and their humans to achieve a harmonious balance where once there was none and have many satisfied clients from all walks of life, including well known celebrities, athletes, high profile entrepreneurs and CEO's as well as retirees, working families, single men and women on a budget.

My education is ongoing through seminars with highly acclaimed internationally known behaviorists in canine science. This field continues to expand with exciting new data in canine behavioral science and I am always eager to learn and apply modern techniques to my training skills. My love and appreciation for dogs grows and their astounding intelligence and abilities to communicate with us never ceases to amaze me.

The methods I believe in and use with excellent results are SAFE, long lasting and do not cause physical or emotional pain or intimidation. I begin by building a strong foundation of mutual understanding and cooperation through teaching and reinforcing desired behaviors, even with the most aggressive dogs. I create a safe environment so dogs can excel at learning in order to achieve maximum success.

My philosophy in teaching dogs and their human companions is simple: create an atmosphere that is conducive to learning, make it fun, reward it well, be patient.

I look forward to helping you and your canine companions. Please contact me today so we can work together to achieve your goals.

Brady Foster

Founder Brady Foster began his passion for learning and working with K-9's while serving time overseas in the Marine Corps. During operations in Iraq, Brady saw the unique and skillful way K-9's were able to aid the troops overseas by detecting explosives, enemy insurgents while simultaneously saving lives. It then became clear to him that dogs really are a man's best friend!

After coming home and completing his bachelor's degree at Rutgers University, Brady continued to train and learn from many trainers in many different areas. Prior to owning his own business, Brady's career was spent working as an executive protection agent in Philadelphia, PA. During this time, Brady got a puppy, Gunner, who he fully trained himself to gain valuable experience both as a handler and a trainer. From there he took a risk, quit his full time job, and went for his dream. Today, his dream is a reality by owning and opening K9 Gunner Tactical.

Sniffspot Florida Top Trainer Frequently Asked Questions

How are Florida dog trainers selected for this list?

These are the top dog trainers in Florida as selected by broad voting from the Sniffspot community and the general public. These trainers are expert dog trainers, who received votes from their delighted customers, due to their excellent dedication to customer service, excellent results and general care they exhibit for their clients. Many have worked with thousands of dogs and are highly experienced trainers.

How can I get in touch with dog trainers?

Each of the trainer profiles contains a link to their website. You can click through to their website where you can find more contact information.

Are these Florida dog trainers certified professionals?

Dog training is not regulated at the federal or state level, so there is no standard dog training certification and professional trainers are not required to be certified. However, certifications are important to show that a professional dog trainer has a standard of expertise to help train your dog. Each trainer’s certifications are listed on their profile.

What are the top certifications for Dog Trainers in Florida?

Some of the top certifications in the dog training industry are CPDT- KA, IAABC, Karen Pryor Academy - KPA certification, Jean Donaldson's Academy - CTC certification and Fear Free Certification. You can review the dog trainer certifications for each specific dog trainer on their profile on this page.

What methods are used in the dog training sessions?

There are many methods for teaching dogs and a lot of disagreement about the correct training approach. All of the Florida trainers included on this list use positive reinforcement training only, as defined by no force, fear, intimidation, or aversive methods used. This includes not using any specifically aversive approach to training or training aid, such as a prong or electronic dog training collar (also called remote dog training collar or shock collars). As for specific training programs and specialties, such as day training / doggie daycare or obedience training, you can see more information in each trainer’s profile.

Are dog training lessons in a training facility or are virtual options available?

Some dog trainers operate exclusively from a training facility, some do house calls and some offer video calls or other virtual options. There are pros and cons to each option and the most efficient behavioral training option depends on specific circumstances, for instance, what hours work best for you. A training center or training ranch can be a good option if your training plan requires facilities, training equipment or dedicated space. We recommend reaching out to the specific trainer you are interested in or browsing their website for more information.

Are dog training lessons private or in a group setting?

Every different circumstance of dog and owners may require a different setting, whether it’s housebreaking issues, anxiety issues, lack of proper socialization, food aggression or just bad habits. Each trainer has different offerings as far as whether they can offer clients a private training session or a group class. Trainers provide information about their private class and group class offerings in their profiles and you can browse their website for more information as well. It may make sense for your specific circumstance to reach out to the trainer to ask if they recommend group or private dog training classes. Some trainers also have a team of specialists that can provide even higher levels of service, or provide specialized sessions, such as pack walks.

How much does dog training in Florida cost?

Florida dog trainers have a wide range of costs for different services and phases of training. For instance behavioral modification that involves boarding is often more expensive than day training, and private lessons are generally more expensive than group lessons. Prices can also vary depending on specific behavioral issues. Lastly, some trainers have more overhead than others, We recommend first picking a trainer that provides the services that you are looking for, then reaching out to them to get up to date pricing.

Is training a dog good for the dog?

Yes! Training has many benefits for dogs. Whether with basic training skills or complex training techniques, going through behavior training with your dog can improve the bond that you share with them. Also, training can do a lot to improve the level of confidence enabling of a dog (and it can also help with building customer confidence!). Rather than being about exerting maximum control over them, it gives them more certainty that they understand how the world around them works. For instance, crate training can help a dog feel safe and at home in a crate vs fearful and uncertain. Dog training can teach important skills, such as leash control, potty training or a general level of obedience skills. And lastly, it’s just fun for the dog to learn life skills and for their family. Training can be very stimulating and enriching for a dog and serve them throughout their entire healthy life!

Can an aggressive dog be trained?

Yes! Any dog behavior can be worked on through training and coaching. Aggression in dogs is a serious issue, but it is also a term that is used very broadly. Many dogs that are thought to be aggressive are actually reactive, which is a different behavior altogether. A trainer can help you interpret signs of aggression, such as excessive barking, fear aggression and leash aggression, and type of aggression. If you believe you have a dog with aggressive behaviors, we recommend reaching out to one of your local top trainers to get their diagnosis and advice.

I am a Florida dog trainer. How can I get listed here?

As long as you have a training facility or do in person training in Florida you can be considered for this list. We update this list once per year, normally starting in January. Make sure to keep an eye on our social media and sign up for email updates with Sniffspot in order to be in the loop on the next round of nominations.

How much do dog trainers make in Florida?

Dog trainer earnings vary widely depending on many factors, such as whether a dog trainer is an employee or owns their own full-service professional dog training business. According to ZipRecruiter, the average dog trainer salary in Florida was $27,527 per year and $13.23 per hour. It is impossible to say how much a dog trainer can earn with a full-service professional dog training company, because the size and profitability of companies can vary widely.

Thousand Oaks, California has been a safe haven for Sniffspot host, Jen, since childhood. Having grown up in busy Santa Barbara, Jen, an introvert from an early age, would seek out solitude and serenity away from tourists attractions and droves of people visiting from elsewhere. “My grandparents own 60 acres about a 30 minute drive from here, and I grew up spending every summer and every holiday visiting them on the ranch,” Jen explained. “In Santa Barbara, we wouldn't go to the beach on the weekend because that's where everybody was, so you'd find places off the beaten path where the tourists weren't. For me, the ranch was just my happy place.”
