Dog Trainers

Welcome to the New York Sniffspot top dog trainer list for 2023. This is a list of the top dog trainers in New York based on votes from the Sniffspot community and the general public. Over 55,000 votes were used in compiling this list. We have only included the top trainers with sufficient votes and the trainers are ordered in terms of the number of votes received. Trainers that tied are ranked in reverse alphabetical order based on first name. All dog trainers on this list are positive reinforcement only, as defined by no force, fear, intimidation, or aversive methods used. To learn more about our dog trainer contest, feel free to view the dog trainer contest post.

Dog training is one of the most important activities someone can do with their dog. Many come to dog training through a specific issue they want addressed, anything from barking to separation anxiety. Some have adopted dogs from animal shelters with an abusive experience and some just have happy puppies looking for everyday life skills. Trainers can help with all kinds of specific skills and issues, from leash manners to territorial aggression to anxiety around skateboards to common puppy challenges. However, what many discover is that working with a trainer is actually a way for a pet owner to deepen their relationship with their dog. The enhanced communication skills that result can increase quality of life, be a rewarding experience, be a social experience and lead to more harmonious relationships. Knowing that one’s dog is having a happier life can dramatically improve peace of mind. As the saying goes: happy dog, happy life. And it extends further than just the dog, to the pet owners. Owner empowerment can actually improve the relationship between owners. And finding the right trainer can make all the difference in the experience.

This list is compiled by Sniffspot, which is the largest network of private dog parks for rent in the world. Each of the thousands of Sniffspot dog parks are hosted by locals on private land with 100% private bookings to maximize safety for guests and their dogs. Sniffspot offers various types of dog parks, including fenced, water parks, indoor dog parks, dog beaches and more. Sniffspot has worked closely with dog trainers to create safe spaces for dogs and our top trainer lists are a natural extension of that relationship. You can browse Sniffspot's local dog parks here.

A much needed service I provide is providing expecting and new parents the skills to navigate dog and baby and dog and toddler relationships.

Behavioral issue focus: Fear based behaviors, aggressive behaviors, baby/dog and child/dog dynamics, resource guarding, barking and lunging on leash, door bolting and jumping on people are some of the behavior issues I commonly encounter with my clientele.

Training methods: As a Fear Free Certified trainer, I will not use pain, fear or intimidation to teach your dog. I will use positive reinforcement through the use of natural motivators such as food, treats, toys, petting, play and also life rewards (your dog getting to do something they want). For behavior issues we will start with a Strategy Session where we can get to know each other, be sure we are a good fit, review your dog's intake form, take a look at where your dog is in his training and in his relationship with you. Then we will put some management strategies in place and develop a training plan for moving forward. I will recommend the best program to successfully reach your goals with your dog.

Why I became a dog trainer: I always knew that I wanted to work with animals. I also knew that my mission in life was to help other people. When my mentor Dr. Stephen Mackenzie mentioned Guiding Eyes for the Blind to me, I did a little research and pow! it hit me - I wanted to train guide dogs for the blind and visually impaired. I lived that dream for 22 years. However, life will throw curve balls and I needed to take a break from guide dog work. I started volunteering with a Labrador Retriever rescue. After several years it became apparent to me that I really wanted to help families and their dogs stay together. Thus First Friend Canine Consulting, llc was born and I couldn't be happier.

My favorite part of being a dog trainer: Watching people and their dogs grow in their relationships, helping them to succeed together. Bringing out the potential on both ends of the leash.

My #1 dog training tip: Smile when you praise your dog!

Arrow Weiser

I am Sparrow aka Arrow, and I am the lead trainer and one of the owners of WeiserWays. I am a dog reactivity specialist and educator and I love to spread the knowledge of positive reinforcement.

I am trans and use he/him pronouns, I am Queer and love serving the LGBTQIA+ community.

I have my undergrad in Psychology and my Masters Degree in Animal Behavior concentrated in dogs.

I focus my work on creating a space where dogs have a voice and are able to communicate freely without the fear of repercussions; while also giving humans an environment where they are able to learn without the pressure of having to be perfect, and instead being intentional, empathetic, and self-aware.

We believe that training is a collaborative approach, and use an anti-racist lens when working on training. This means we believe in being vulnerable, deconstructing perfectionism, training, and feelings; dismantling the dog/owner binary, and instead creating a space where you and your dog can learn how to love and communicate with one another authentically.

WeiserWays is a hybrid business, we train on zoom worldwide, as well as in person around the DMV area.

Certifications:

B.S. Psychology
MSC Animal Behavior

Services include:

  • Aggressive dog training
  • In home training
  • Reactive dog training

More info about service provided:

WeiserWays is a hybrid business (virtual and in person) and focuses on dog reactivity and aggression.

Our training is based in teaching the dog how to make decisions that are rewarding and enriching for both the dog and the human. In order for us to do this management is out in place to ensure that we are setting the dog up for success.

We use some cues in training, but mainly focus on teaching the dog how to make decisions on their own by giving the dog choices.

We do this so the dog learns how to make decisions and problem solve on their own instead of always waiting for the human to give them a cue.

This allows the dog to have more freedom of movement, freedom of choice.

Behavioral issue focus: I work with dogs that are lead reactive to other dogs, humans and other animals, dogs that guard their house, family, or barriers, muzzle training, dogs that are escape artists, and dogs that have bite records that need some extra TLC

Training methods:

My training begins with a 90 minute virtual consultation that is all education based. This goes over the canine ladder of aggression, dog behavior postures and body language, WeiserWays definitions, dogs hierarchy of needs, how to fill your dogs cup up, the hierarchy of dog training, what Positive Reinforcement is and how to make it a lifestyle, the wheel of emotions, stages of competence, and a basic emotions print out.

Once we finish the consultation there is a one week observation period where the dog guardian uses the education from the consultation to observe their dog and better understand their stress signals, patterns of reactivity, takes the dog to the vet, changes the environment if needed, and fills out a daily observation log.

Once the observation period is over we begin training. The human tells me what they observed in their dog, this allows the human to be kore aware of the dogs emotions and better advocate for them.

Once we begin training I have a training plan for the dog and guardian that is unique to their training needs. This plan covers the expected duration of training, exercises we will be workin on, homework, a training log for the human to fill out daily, and a training portal to upload videos, take notes, see their homework, and ask questions.

I see my clients once a week and depending on the severity of the dogs Reactivity, and if the human is doing the homework outside of training sessions we work together anywhere from one month to two years.

My training is founded in Positive Reinforcement and anti racist practices. This means we don't believe in punishment, and we dismantle the dog-owner binary. Words matter in my training, and the way we work with dogs is always collaborative and curious.

Why I became a dog trainer: I became a dog trainer because I was adopted and a reactive kid when I was younger and I felt that no one understood me. It wasn't until I worked with a therapist that used her dog in our sessions that I felt more understood and comfortable. Because of my reactive past I understand reactive dogs on a different level and want to give back what they gave to me.

My favorite part of being a dog trainer: Teaching people the beauty of being vulnerable with their dogs, and giving dogs a space where they can be their authentic self without judgement.

My #1 dog training tip: Become more self aware of your emotions so you are able to recognize how you are feeling, this way you will not react to your dogs reactions, and you will create more space for yourself to recharge.

Service areas: I work mainly in Baltimore and Washington DC covering Baltimore city, Baltimore Country, Prince George's county, Bethesda

I cover all of DC and am often working with clients in Capital Hill, Columbia Heights, pleasant Plains, Silver Springs, Brightwood Park, Brentwood

Training methods: I am a fear free certified trainer and all of my training programs are created with force-free, positive reinforcement training plans. We then meet for live training sessions (either virtual or in-person) where I strive to help them meet their training goals while providing education around all things dog (body language and species-specific needs, helping our dogs feel safe, appropriate expectations for behavior, etc.). We check in regularly to make sure the dog guardians are feeling comfortable and empowered by the training process!

Why I became a dog trainer: I adopted my dog Molly in 2014 and ended up spending the next few years working with her on her reactivity towards people and other dogs. My favorite part of being a dog trainer: Getting to witness the excitement and happiness people feel as they connect with their dogs through training!

My #1 dog training tip: Learn about dog body language! This is such a valuable foundation skill - if you can understand what your dog is telling you, you will be better able to address their needs, reduce or prevent unwanted behaviors, and supporting them when they are having a hard time.

Behavioral issue focus: Urban dog socialization, comfortability, and reactivity

Training methods: I am a force-free, consent-based, positive reinforcement trainer meaning I set each dog up for success as much as possible so they can be comfortable, happy, and engaged

Why I became a dog trainer: I adopted a fearful mixed pit-bull type dog in 2015 and I wanted to learn more to best help him. We enrolled in PetSmart training classes where I became close to our trainer and she wanted me to work with her. Upon graduation, I have since been a full-time dog trainer and found the passion to educate and inspire others to do best by their dogs

My favorite part of being a dog trainer: I get to educate and inspire many people to form solid and healthy relationships with their dogs!

My #1 dog training tip: Reward the good moments! Oftentimes we get wrapped up when our dog is "bad" and are reactive to their behavior, but if we focus and reward when they are "good", we prevent the rehearsal of undesired behaviors while teaching them what we like, plus we have a more positive and happy mindset change and both dog and human are happier!

Tori Ganino

Tori is an avid dog lover that originally went to college to study Psychology. After earning a Bachelor's Degree of Science, she adopted a 5-month-old dog from a local shelter. Almost immediately, behavior problems started to show where her new companion, Cooper, was afraid to meet people, barking and lunging whenever someone came near. Tori elicited the help of a behaviorist who's suggested technique was pinning Cooper dog against the wall and forcing him to deal with strangers that were approaching him until he emotionally shut down.

Tori knew that there must be a better, more humane way, and decided to take her passion for psychology and dogs and enrolled in the Animal Behavior College. Through their hands-on educational program and apprenticeship, Tori developed the skills to handle all training situations with a positive approach and graduated as an Animal Behavior College Dog Trainer (ABCDT).

Tori furthered her expertise by successfully passing the Certified Professional Dog Trainer Exam - Knowledge Assessed, earning the title CPDT-KA. Unlike many other organizations that offer non-standardized take-home tests, the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers requires at least 300 hours hands-on experience, references and the completion of a standardized test used nationwide. Continuing education credits are required to maintain this certification.

In October of 2015, Tori became a Certified Dog Behavior Consultant (CDBC) through the International Association of Behavior Consultants (IAABC). This is a title that less than 200 people in the world have. In addition to an extensive written exam, requirements for membership include a minimum of three years and 500 hours experience in animal behavior consulting with client present, case studies, 400 hours minimum of coursework, mentorship as well as seminars related to the core areas of competency. Continuing education credits are required to maintain this certification.

In 2016, Tori became a certified Victoria Stilwell Academy Mentor, and Animal Behavior College Mentor.

Alex Ferrente

I received my Bachelor's degree in Animal Behavior, Ecology, and Conservation from Canisius College in 2015. During my time there, I studied the behavior of a captive population of beluga whales. This led to my first professional training position - with marine mammals! After graduating, I moved to a small island in Washington State where I worked for two seasons as a Marine Naturalist for a whale watching outfitter. In my spare time, I volunteered at the local animal shelter which sparked my interest in companion animal behavior.

In 2016, I accepted a position in the behavior and training department at Lollypop Farm where I remained for 4 years. There, I taught group classes and private lessons for members of the public, performed dog behavior evaluations, and carried out behavior modification for cats and dogs who weren't quite ready for adoption.

In 2020, I left to start Young Lion Training and Behavior with my training partner, Rebecca. It was a smooth transition to working for ourselves and I love the work-life balance I'm able to maintain. Doing so helps me to be the best trainer that I can be. I have two dogs and a cat of my own, and they all love training just as much as I do!

Certifications: Certified Professional Dog Trainer - Knowledge Assessed

Services include:

  • In home training
  • Reactive dog training
  • Puppy training

More info about service provided: We offer in-home and virtual behavior consultations, continued coaching, day training and group classes for dogs of all ages and across a range of behavior challenges. One of our favorite services to provide is our puppy starter package - where we can get your puppy started off on the right foot from day one!

Behavioral issue focus: Basic manners, impulse control, reactivity, resource guarding, cat-dog introductions, and more.

Training methods: We adhere to the humane hierarchy and never use or recommend aversive training techniques. Private training always starts with an initial behavior consultation followed by a written training plan, and the type of follow-up sessions depend on the case. For clients who like to work more independently, we offer more intermittent coaching every few weeks. And for clients who prefer more accelerated, hands on guidance, we offer multiple times per week day training sessions - as well as some hybrid options between those two.

Why I became a dog trainer: I've always been interested in animal behavior and dog training/behavior consulting has been such an effective way to help a large number of dogs and their humans live more harmoniously together. I love having a career that allows me to advocate for science-based, ethical training methods.

My favorite part of being a dog trainer: My favorite moments are when clients can see and feel proud of the changes they've worked so hard on with their dog. It also feels pretty special to be one of so many dogs favorite people.

My #1 dog training tip: Be kind, patient, and set them up for success by breaking your goals down into tiny, achievable steps!

Service areas: Greater Rochester Area, Finger Lakes, and beyond

Heather Adams

I graduated from the Karen Pryor Academy for Animal Training and Behavior in 2008. Since then I've had the great joy of helping hundreds of families enjoy their dogs more by making sure they actually listen! It's been very rewarding along the way.

I love teaching both dogs and people in our programs that help families with things like jumping, pulling on the leash and coming when they're called and even fun agility classes to help families teach their dogs to pay more attention to them. I also help dogs who suffer from reactivity, fear and anxiety as a certified Behavior Adjustment Training Instructor.

Our agility classes are perfect for families that want to join in for fun, but we've got serious competitors that love our classes too. My continuing education is now highly focused on agility with some of the best trainers in the world, so I can bring the latest and greatest techniques and training to my agility students.

I believe it's important to be a great dog trainer, but it's just as important to be a great teacher. After all, my job is to teach you how to train your dog. I'm a graduate of the Teacher Certification Program at the University at Buffalo and have practical experience teaching biology and science to all age groups, in addition to over 14 years teaching people how to train their dogs.

I also believe the best teachers are life long learners. And the best part is, there is always something new to learn to keep life fun and interesting! My mission is to bring my passion for dog training and teaching people together, to help you bring out the best in your dog.

Certifications: Karen Pryor Academy Certified Training Partner and Behavior Adjustment Training Instructor

Services include:

  • Reactive dog training
  • Off leash training
  • Puppy training
  • Agility training

More info about service provided: We offer private lesson programs and day training for pet dog obedience and manners for puppies and dogs of all ages and breeds/mixes; special training programs for dogs with reactivity, fear and anxiety; we also offer agility training through private lessons and group lessons in two locations. We specialize in off leash training and getting your dog to come when called no matter what!

Behavioral issue focus: Our most typical students have young dogs from puppy through 2-3 years old that have common adolescent issues like jumping up on people, greeting people and being wild when guests come over, pulling on the leash, chewing on things, nipping people, barking, and potty training problems. We also work with dogs who are reactive to other dogs or people, and those with fear and anxiety issues, like separation anxiety.

Training methods: All of our students start with an evaluation/consultation here at our training facility in Corfu, NY or online through Zoom or FaceTime. During that time, I observe and evaluate the dog's behavior, get a detailed history about the dog, determine what the owner's goals and preferences are for training and present all the options. I also describe and demonstrate our training methods, which include positive reinforcement methods such as luring and clicker training. Our programs are comprehensive and include substantial support, training equipment, video reference library and much more.

Why I became a dog trainer: I became a dog trainer to help people and dogs live their best lives together. Many years ago, I adopted a dog named Sadie who had severe separation anxiety and no matter how many classes we joined, she just wouldn't get better or come when called. I started my own research and tried just about every method out there until I came across a book by Karen Pryor called Don't Shoot the Dog. From there, I learned about her Academy and the rest is history. Sadie had a great life with the right training and understanding. My mission is to help people understand their dogs and use the kindest training methods that make more sense to dogs, using the way they most naturally learn.

Jamie Sharma

I was born and raised in the great northwest. Little Boise, Idaho to be specific. The spark of inspiration for this career is still up for debate, a good story to ask me about, but for now, we will say it started at around eleven years old when my family brought home a Yellow Lab puppy, Chance. I attended training classes and enjoyed learning how to train him. It completely fascinated me how humans could have this unique relationship with our canine companions.

It became my dream profession when I began employment at Petco in Boise, Idaho in December of 2006. My official Canine Education Training was through Petco's Certified Dog Trainer Program which after graduating, in 2010, I became a Certified Professional Dog Trainer (CPDT) and Training Mentor for Petco. I then continued my education online in Animal Behavior.

I worked at, ran training programs and trained new trainers at seven different Petco locations spanning from Idaho to Washington state and finally New York state where I now reside. My employment would voluntarily end, 10 years later, on March 24th of 2017 to open my own business and expand my career. In December of 2022, I became a certified Family Dog Mediator.

I take every opportunity to continue my education with courses, seminars, conferences and more as frequently as possible. Research in canine behavior is never-ending and there is always more to learn. I will never stop trying to learn more because I strive to be the best I can be for my clients and my dog.

Heather Allen

My interest in dog training started over 20 years ago when some behavioral issues exhibited by my first two dogs required me to seek out a professional dog trainer. This experience opened the door to the world of dog training for me. I took what I learned from my training experience and sought out a Canine Good Citizen certification with one of those dogs.

We passed with flying colors but when we were done, I realized that my dog did not enjoy the process; that my tight parameters and micro-management was not how he deserved to live and not how I wanted to live with my dogs. This revelation further fed my need for more knowledge.

I began to assist local trainers with their obedience classes, and started to research everything I could about canine body language and behavior. I was in search of something. I did not know exactly what that 'something' was so I started to travel to training workshops and seminars, exposing myself to many different methodologies.

This search for knowledge led me to my first of many Training Between The Ears (TBTE) workshops with Mark McCabe. It rocked my world! This method of training was exactly what I was looking for, a complete game changer for me. After my first day of the seminar, I drove back to my hotel on an emotional rollercoaster. I was thinking about how I used to train and wishing that I had known about this system back then.

The TBTE method is a way to modify a dog's perception about its environment with the least amount of conflict possible. Being able to remove conflict while working with a dog spoke to my heart. Helping a dog learn to find true relaxation and a healthy emotional state spoke to my mind. When I can help change a dog's mind, and help it let go of anxiety and fear, obedience work can then become a fun event between the dog and handler rather than a chore that caps unwanted behaviors.

TBTE has been a true gift to me and has changed how I view dog training. Helping dogs and their owners' live happy, healthy, fulfilled lives was the 'something' that I had been looking for. I am proud to be a TBTE practitioner and am grateful for my mentors Mark McCabe and his wife Stephanie. I will be forever thankful that our paths crossed.

My husband and I volunteered for Big Dogs Big Hearts Rescue for many years, fostering over 50 dogs. We have taken in many special needs dogs with issues ranging from medical to behavioral and we have learned so much from the experience. This experience lead me to accepting the role of Foster Coordinator for the rescue and I was involved with the behavioral evaluation process for dogs seeking placement in our program.

Ettel Edshteyn

I've been training for over a decade, specializing in fearful and aggressive dogs in NYC most of that time. I've worked with DOH cases, testified as an expert witness in a NYCHA case, work with NYCACC's Community Pets Program to offer free training to underserved communities, worked on Rikers Island with their Rikers Rovers program, work closely with veterinary behaviorists on complicated behavioral and medical cases, and do therapy work with my certified therapy dog.

I often say I came to dog training for the dogs and stayed for the people.

Certifications:

Karen Pryor Academy - CTP
Fear Free Certified Professional

Services include:

  • Aggressive dog training
  • In home training
  • Reactive dog training
  • Off leash training
  • Puppy training

More info about service provided: I specialize in working with fearful and aggressive dogs and their people. Training can be in person in your neighborhood and home, or virtually. I also work with all pet dog behaviors, including puppy training, obedience training, manners, etc.

Behavioral issue focus: Leash reactivity is the most common concern I'm called about, to both people and dogs. Second is getting comfortable with new people. Fear of being outside the apartment, guarding high value resources, leash manners, barking at home, being handled, getting comfortable with children/new babies are also very common.

Training methods: I focus on motivating dogs and their owners. I don't use or recommend corrective collars, and instead work on setting everyone up to get things right and supporting good choices. Dog training is often much more than just behavior, and I take time to see if there might be a need to bring in other specialists, especially regarding medical concerns. I don't use cookie cutter programs and everything we work on is tailored to each client and their individual needs and preferences.

Why I became a dog trainer: My heart and soul dog, Charlie (a black Poodle), had significant separation anxiety. I was in graduate school studying English Literature at the time. I spent most of my time working with my dog on his behavior and learning about dog behavior while working at a boarding kennel, and later starting a dog walking business. Eventually I decided I wanted to pursue dog training instead of academia and left graduate school for dog training school!

My favorite part of being a dog trainer: Supporting owners and helping them feel like there's hope.

My #1 dog training tip: Reward the heck out of what you want to see more of your dog doing on a daily basis.

Benah Stiewing

A lifelong animal geek, I first started training dogs at the age of 12 with my Toy Poodle, Kodi. I quickly became completely obsessed, and absorbed as much information as I possibly could. Kodi was an excellent first teacher - he was unmotivated and fearful.

Determined to be a team, I sought help from talented trainers and slowly started to broaden and deepen my knowledge of canine behavior. Years later, Kodi earned his Master Agility Champion title. I have trained with many master animal trainers and devoted myself to becoming the best possible advocate for every dog. I have worked in animal rescues, boarding facilities, and studied under some of the world's top agility competitors.

In 2015, I brought home Mojo, my first Border Collie, who has been a devoted and accomplished teammate. From a young age, Mojo demonstrated aggression and anxiety and I had to quickly learn how to be his best advocate. Under leading trainers, I dove deeper into canine behavior and communication than ever before, and haven't looked back since.

I understand that relationship-building, fluid communication, and trust are the fundamental building blocks for every human-dog relationship. In order for our dogs and us to work in unison, there must be inherent value and trust in the relationship. We build this through understanding our dog's needs and desires and advocating for such as best we can. I have supported many teams in reaching goals and overcoming barriers, but my favorite moment will always be when a team is able to effectively communicate and experience joy in their work together.

Services include:

Kristen Hanley

My name is Kristen and I am the owner of Dogology WNY. In addition to being a dog trainer and behavior consultant, I am a licensed mental health counselor and have been working in this field for ~15 years. I have a BS in psychology and English from SUNY Geneseo and an MS in mental health counseling from Canisius College.

For the past 10+ years I have been an active volunteer in local rescue. That started when I saw a dog posted on Facebook that needed a foster - he was first on a rural shelter's euthanasia list because he had been surrendered by his owners (so there was no hold time, like there is for strays). He looked just like our resident dog at the time, and became our first foster dog - and our first 'foster failure'.

Since then we have fostered over 80 dogs (and only 'failed' twice more). But that first foster failure dog - Gideon - had some fear and reactivity issues that began my dog training journey and lead me to pursue training and behavior as a second career - eventually enrolling in Victoria Stilwell's Academy for Dog Training and Behavior and then pursuing my certification with the Council for Professional Dog Trainers and accreditation with the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants.

I continue to be active in rescue; and in addition to fostering and helping with behavior and training, have had roles including direct care and training of dogs in the rescue/shelter, mentoring new volunteers, and working with adoptive families to find a good match for their homes.

I currently live with my four dogs and husband in Niagara County. My dogs have titles in dock jumping, barn hunt, nose work, CGC, and my oldest and best boy is a therapy dog with TDI and the SPCA's Paws for Love Program.

Kizz Robinson

I love living in Brooklyn because there's nowhere else like it. Dogs don't always love the same sights, sounds, and surprises that I do. I have extensive experience helping dogs feel safer in a place that serves up a lot of surprising and sometimes worrisome experiences to our dogs.

As a certified dog trainer and behavior consultant, I focus on discovering the causes of behavior and working to change our dogs' associations with the things that trigger their reactions. This is how we change behavior for the long haul.

I've got your back so that you can concentrate on training and enjoying your dog. I support you through the changes you will need to make to reach your training goals by providing detailed homework emails after our sessions and email support between sessions.

Russ is a Karen Pryor Academy Graduate. KPA graduates participate in an extensive educational program culminating in a detailed assessment of their technical ability and hands-on skill teaching pet owners and training pet dogs.

Successful candidates must complete the program, earn the equivalent of an A on each component of the assessment, and pledge to uphold the high standards and practices of Karen Pryor Academy.

Biography

Russ has been a Region Coordinator for Guiding Eyes for the Blind (GEB), and has raised thirteen guide dogs for GEB. He has prepared new puppy-raisers for their first puppy and has taught weekly classes to the volunteer puppy-raisers until their dogs returned to the training school.

Russ is a retired social worker and has worked for over 25 years in the human services profession. As a therapist and clinical supervisor, he has provided services to people overcoming addictions and mental illness, and to those resolving family conflict. Russ's career has reinforced his belief in the resiliency of people and the power of positive relationships.

Growing up on a small farm in central New York, Russ has always been drawn to nature and relationships with animals. Russ learned to relate with animals in a calm, consistent, and rewarding manner while helping his father shepherd sheep and care for other livestock and companion animals.

Russ learned that working with animals is a sacred experience, that their needs come first, and that if you pay attention you learn a great deal about yourself in the process. Russ's concern for animals was advanced in his training as a bereavement counselor to assist families through the difficult time of the loss of a loved family pet.

Being a professional dog trainer is a natural integration of Russ's human service career, guide dog experience, and animal affinity.

Russ holds a MS in social work from Marywood University, in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and a BS in education, with a major in outdoor recreation, from SUNY Cortland, Cortland, New York. Ferdie Yau

Ferdie Yau has an MA in Conservation Biology from Columbia University (2007) and a BS in Natural Resource Ecology and Management from the University of Michigan (1998). He is the Staff Trainer at the Humane Society of Westchester and an instructor at CATCH Canine Trainers Academy. Ferdie studies urban coyote behavior and population dynamics with the Gotham Coyote Project.

Ferdie was a zookeeper and trainer both the Central Park Zoo and Bronx Zoo from 2002 to 2005 where he trained dozens of exotic species including California sea lions, river otters, Arctic foxes and polar bears. His approach to behavior training and animal welfare was deeply influenced by his experience caring for Gus, the iconic polar bear of the Central Park Zoo. Gus was labeled 'neurotic' by the public and media because he repetitively swam laps around the pool. Refusing to watch him suffer, Ferdie pioneered the development and implementation of a progressive training and enrichment program for the polar bears that reduced stereotypic behaviors related to stress and anxiety.

Ferdie’s graduate research led him deep into the jungles of Belize in 2006 to study the behavior and population dynamics of jaguar and their prey. Following graduation from Columbia University, Ferdie went on to become an ecologist for the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation, where he implemented and managed multi-million dollar projects to protect and restore natural habitats and wildlife to the Bronx River from 2009 to 2013.

Ferdie has been training dogs and educating their humans in New York City and Westchester County in NY since 2007. He founded Sits & Wiggles Dog Training in 2009 and joined Behavior Vets in 2020. In his role as the Director of Shelter and Community Outreach Ferdie fights for better animal welfare and improved access and awareness of humane treatment and training methods for all animals.

Ferdie lives in the Bronx with his wife and retired coyote scat-detection terrier mix, Scout. In his free time, he enjoys exploring nature, hiking, cooking, and eating well!

Tara Baggerman

Tara has loved -- and learned from -- animals since she was a toddler. Although she bonded with a variety of pets from gerbils and guinea pigs to cats and chickens, dogs were always Tara's favorite companions.
Although Tara never trained any of her childhood pooches for competitive dog sports (at the time she was not aware such things existed), it's not surprising that her adult life revolves around canines. A professional trainer for over a decade, Tara has worked with thousands of dogs of all breeds, ages and backgrounds.

Tara started out as a 'pet dog' trainer, primarily schooling her canine students in household manners. From there Tara expanded to trick-training and Rally Obedience. However, all along, Tara's passion has been dog agility! In the fall 2013 Tara left her day job to focus full time on her favorite k9 sport and FOLLOW THE LEDA AGILITY opened in Gansevoort,NY.

No matter what Tara is teaching she remains a positive dog trainer, and strongly believes learning should be both a challenging and an enjoyable experience for dogs and their human teammates. Tara has always believed that future agility puppies should be given a thorough "foundation education" before ever stepping a paw on equipment.

Brianna Scarborough

Early Years: An Animal Lover From the Start

Brianna Scarborough has been an animal lover since even before she could speak. Growing up on Long Island, she always had a knack for discovering local strays and, like the pied piper of Oakdale, NY, she'd bring them all home to love (infinite thanks to her understanding mother and father). Once she even tried to take in a wild possum! The creature hissed and snarled at everyone else, but allowed itself to be held and snuggled by Brianna. Though her mother drew the line on keeping that one, buther future as an animal whisperer was clear from the start. Her love of all animals has led her to be mother to many, a plethora of dogs and dog breeds (such as Neapolitan Mastiff, Black Lab/German Shepherd, Boxer, Husky, Rottweiler, Pitbull, Sheltie, and a rainbow of mutts), horses, birds, cats, sugar gliders, chinchillas, and (after the possum), she once even had a pet skunk. If that isn't love we don't know what is!

Learning From a Pro (a love letter to Nietzsche)

Brianna says her Black Lab/German Shepherd cross, Nietzsche, was her best teacher.

She says, 'He was a wise and calm presence. We were together for 13 years. We were inseparable companions. He was kind and accepting of all creatures and incredibly smart. I learned the importance of remaining calm, especially when working with anxious or aggressive dogs. He taught me many valuable lessons about leadership and unconditional love.'

Equine to Canine: Translating Rehabilitation Techniques

Brianna has spent nearly 17 years training and riding horses. Her childhood love for animals developed into a more academic interest in animal communication and body language. She studied wild horse behavior and learned to train and rehabilitate horses through positive reinforcement, without force. She eventually became able to ride horses that previously couldn't be ridden, and learned from experience to help horses stop problematic behaviors. Seeing her methodologies pay off, she became eager to apply these same teachings to her work with dogs.

Making a Career Change

Despite corporate and executive success, Brianna felt unfulfilled and unhappy in her career. She felt her work was not the right fit for her desire to have a real and lasting impact in the world. She would leave her office job in NYC, late in the evening, and travel to the stable in Long Island to work with her therapy horses. She would wake up before the sun rose to do training work with rescue dogs before heading into work. It was here, in these quiet moments, seeing real change in animals lives for the better, that her next step became clear and the dream of Kapooch was formed. She studied wolf behavior and communication in the wild, drawing on her childhood love for animals and years of experience in horse training, and became a self-taught dog trainer.

Studying Under the Masters

After notable successes as a self-taught trainer Brianna wanted to delve into dog psychology even further. Many of Brianna's basic training philosophies paralleled that of world-renowned dog whisperer Cesar Millan, so in an effort to further her knowledge, she decided to learn from the master himself. In 2015 she studied with Cesar Millan at the beautiful Country Inn Pet Resort & Dog Psychology Center, in FL.

Brianna says, 'Learning from Cesar was life-changing. So much about canine therapy and training is about body language and energy focus, so simply being in Cesar's presence was invaluable. The experience has opened my eyes to a whole new realm of dog behavior and psychology.' Briana has taken her experience and integrated the knowledge Cesar passed on to her into her training regimens. Brianna has seen her training have a real and lasting impact on canines and the family 'pack'. 'It's all about achieving balance in the dog through energy, consistency, structure, and follow through', she says.

With a thirst for knowledge, and a boundless desire to help as many humans and dogs as possible, Brianna went on to study with other trainers to learn a variety of disciplines. She has even trained with one of the world's best gun and hunt dog trainers, Martin Deeley.

Brianna's Training Methodology

Brianna provides canine rehabilitation commonly working with dog-to-dog aggression, dog-to-human aggression, fearfulness, and anxiety, among other issues. In addition to rehabilitation, she provides basic training, and agility training. She primarily utilizes methods focusing on the energy of her canine and human clients. And employs a multidisciplinary approach based on dog psychology, human interaction, and natural canine communication. Her style is not formulaic: each dog requires its own unique approach.

A Commitment to Benevolence

Over the years, Brianna recognized the need for funding for quality organizations, which help animals in need. Brianna has always wished to help that process along in some way, which is why she's chosen to donate 5% of all proceeds to K9s For Warriors.

Additionally, Brianna donates her spare time to rehabilitating shelter dogs with behavioral issues that would otherwise be 'unadoptable' so that they too can find their loving forever home.

What kind of dog training do you do?
We like to simply call it 'good' dog training! It is 'good' because it works, 'good' in that it's kind, and also 'good' in that both people and dogs tend to enjoy it.

We strive to make training accessible to everyone, to give our clients easy-to-implement training protocols, and to solve behavioral problems with the least invasive, most humane and effective methods possible.

There are lots of other labels that can be applied to the kind of training we practice, among them: reward-based training, progressive reinforcement training, clicker training, and science-based training. It is perhaps most frequently referred to as Positive Reinforcement training. This label can be a little problematic for two reason. First, positive reinforcement is only one of many tools we have in our toolbox, and secondly, it is easy to misinterpret the 'positive' in this name as having something to do with smiley face emojis. The 'positive' in this context just refers to addition. It has nothing to do with being friendly and nice - two qualities that are not-essential to being a 'good' dog trainer. However, we do happen to be both friendly and nice!

Why I became a dog trainer: To help people communicate more effectively with their pet dogs!

Aron Winter

I have been working with animals, including dogs, for over 10 years. I was a pet sitter for many years before deciding to go back to school to be a dog trainer during the 2020 lockdown. I graduated from CATCH Canine Trainer's Academy and worked under Danielle Basciano at CNY Pet Training and Behavior in Syracuse, NY for several years. Recently, I purchased land in the Hudson Valley and now have my own business!

Certifications: CCTA Certified Dog Trainer (CCDT)

Services include:

  • In home training
  • Reactive dog training
  • Off leash training
  • Puppy training

More info about service provided: I offer private dog training sessions at my training center in Hannacroix, NY or in your home. I offer training in everything from basic obedience to mild behavior issues. I also offer puppy socialization, behavior evaluations, basic manners classes and even dog walking!

Behavioral issue focus: Most behaviors issues I see in my area include on-leash reactivity and pulling, barking and separation issues.

Training methods: My training uses the LIMA method (Least Intrusive, Minimally Aversive) and I use a positive reinforcement approach when working with dogs. I focus on teaching owners how to work with their dog and build a lasting relationship that will make both dog and owner happy.

Why I became a dog trainer: As a pet sitter, I saw a lot of room for improvement in my client's dogs and it awoke a desire to learn how to help people make positive changes in their relationships with their dogs.

My favorite part of being a dog trainer: I love seeing the 'aha!' moments in both dogs and humans. When owners put forth the effort and do the work, it really pays off for everyone involved. Success is the goal and when I see dogs really starting to 'get it', it makes it all worth it.

My #1 dog training tip: Don't expect a quick fix. Understand that changing behavior in dogs (and humans!) takes time and consistency.

Sniffspot New York Top Trainer Frequently Asked Questions

How are New York dog trainers selected for this list?

These are the top dog trainers in New York as selected by broad voting from the Sniffspot community and the general public. These trainers are expert dog trainers, who received votes from their delighted customers, due to their excellent dedication to customer service, excellent results and general care they exhibit for their clients. Many have worked with thousands of dogs and are highly experienced trainers.

How can I get in touch with dog trainers?

Each of the trainer profiles contains a link to their website. You can click through to their website where you can find more contact information.

Are these New York dog trainers certified professionals?

Dog training is not regulated at the federal or state level, so there is no standard dog training certification and professional trainers are not required to be certified. However, certifications are important to show that a professional dog trainer has a standard of expertise to help train your dog. Each trainer’s certifications are listed on their profile.

What are the top certifications for Dog Trainers in New York?

Some of the top certifications in the dog training industry are CPDT- KA, IAABC, Karen Pryor Academy - KPA certification, Jean Donaldson's Academy - CTC certification and Fear Free Certification. You can review the dog trainer certifications for each specific dog trainer on their profile on this page.

What methods are used in the dog training sessions?

There are many methods for teaching dogs and a lot of disagreement about the correct training approach. All of the New York trainers included on this list use positive reinforcement training only, as defined by no force, fear, intimidation, or aversive methods used. This includes not using any specifically aversive approach to training or training aid, such as a prong or electronic dog training collar (also called remote dog training collar or shock collars). As for specific training programs and specialties, such as day training / doggie daycare or obedience training, you can see more information in each trainer’s profile.

Are dog training lessons in a training facility or are virtual options available?

Some dog trainers operate exclusively from a training facility, some do house calls and some offer video calls or other virtual options. There are pros and cons to each option and the most efficient behavioral training option depends on specific circumstances, for instance, what hours work best for you. A training center or training ranch can be a good option if your training plan requires facilities, training equipment or dedicated space. We recommend reaching out to the specific trainer you are interested in or browsing their website for more information.

Are dog training lessons private or in a group setting?

Every different circumstance of dog and owners may require a different setting, whether it’s housebreaking issues, anxiety issues, lack of proper socialization, food aggression or just bad habits. Each trainer has different offerings as far as whether they can offer clients a private training session or a group class. Trainers provide information about their private class and group class offerings in their profiles and you can browse their website for more information as well. It may make sense for your specific circumstance to reach out to the trainer to ask if they recommend group or private dog training classes. Some trainers also have a team of specialists that can provide even higher levels of service, or provide specialized sessions, such as pack walks.

How much does dog training in New York cost?

New York dog trainers have a wide range of costs for different services and phases of training. For instance behavioral modification that involves boarding is often more expensive than day training, and private lessons are generally more expensive than group lessons. Prices can also vary depending on specific behavioral issues. Lastly, some trainers have more overhead than others, We recommend first picking a trainer that provides the services that you are looking for, then reaching out to them to get up to date pricing.

Is training a dog good for the dog?

Yes! Training has many benefits for dogs. Whether with basic training skills or complex training techniques, going through behavior training with your dog can improve the bond that you share with them. Also, training can do a lot to improve the level of confidence enabling of a dog (and it can also help with building customer confidence!). Rather than being about exerting maximum control over them, it gives them more certainty that they understand how the world around them works. For instance, crate training can help a dog feel safe and at home in a crate vs fearful and uncertain. Dog training can teach important skills, such as leash control, potty training or a general level of obedience skills. And lastly, it’s just fun for the dog to learn life skills and for their family. Training can be very stimulating and enriching for a dog and serve them throughout their entire healthy life!

Can an aggressive dog be trained?

Yes! Any dog behavior can be worked on through training and coaching. Aggression in dogs is a serious issue, but it is also a term that is used very broadly. Many dogs that are thought to be aggressive are actually reactive, which is a different behavior altogether. A trainer can help you interpret signs of aggression, such as excessive barking, fear aggression and leash aggression, and type of aggression. If you believe you have a dog with aggressive behaviors, we recommend reaching out to one of your local top trainers to get their diagnosis and advice.

I am a New York dog trainer. How can I get listed here?

As long as you have a training facility or do in person training in New York you can be considered for this list. We update this list once per year, normally starting in January. Make sure to keep an eye on our social media and sign up for email updates with Sniffspot in order to be in the loop on the next round of nominations.

How much do dog trainers make in New York?

According to ZipRecruiter, the average dog trainer salary in New York was $36,025 per year and $17.32 per hour. It is impossible to say how much a dog trainer can earn with a full-service professional dog training company, because the size and profitability of companies can vary widely.

The State of Public Dog Parks Across the United States

From 2009 to 2020, there was a 40 percent increase in the development of public dog parks. Designated spots for canine exercise have become commonplace in every major city in North America — many pet owners won’t even consider renting an apartment that doesn’t have its own fenced-in pet area for their canine companions.

How This Family is Affording Their Dream Property Through Renting it Hourly to Dogs

Thousand Oaks, California has been a safe haven for Sniffspot host, Jen, since childhood. Having grown up in busy Santa Barbara, Jen, an introvert from an early age, would seek out solitude and serenity away from tourists attractions and droves of people visiting from elsewhere. “My grandparents own 60 acres about a 30 minute drive from here, and I grew up spending every summer and every holiday visiting them on the ranch,” Jen explained. “In Santa Barbara, we wouldn't go to the beach on the weekend because that's where everybody was, so you'd find places off the beaten path where the tourists weren't. For me, the ranch was just my happy place.”
